While the first few minutes of “Accidente” may seem startling, they have the power to grip you in the gut. As its name suggests, it all begins with the drama that takes place at a little boy’s birthday party. Delighted to be reunited, the children are playing inside a bouncy castle when a gust of wind bursts. The castle flies away, causing the death of three toddlers and the disappearance of a little girl. While this event seems impossible, it is nevertheless based on very real accidents that occur several times a year. While each family mourns its little one, the catastrophe turns out to be more complex and perhaps not as accidental as it seems.
Released on August 21 on Netflix, this ten-episode Mexican creation quickly rose to the top of the most-watched series on the platform, dethroning “Emily In Paris”. Directed by Gracia Querejeta and Klych López, it is carried by several actors famous for their roles in telenovelas but also in internationally renowned series such as “Sense8” for actress Erendira Ibarra or “Narcos: Mexico” and “Griselda” for Alberto Guerra.
The heroes find themselves at the mercy of their feelings
A true drama, the fiction explores the intimacy of families in its rawest and most frank aspect. Dissecting the emotions of the characters with skill, it stages the multiple ways of living and reacting to the loss of a loved one. From anger to sadness, through the need for revenge and the quest for justice, the heroes find themselves at the mercy of their feelings.
Based on the codes of Mexican productions, we find all the elements that make a series addictive: the settling of scores against a backdrop of drug trafficking, corruption, forbidden romances, social inequalities that lead to violence, etc. The progress of the story is well controlled with answers distilled throughout the episodes. The suspense, very present, creates a heavy and gripping atmosphere that encourages you to continue watching.
Although this novelty does not escape the clichés, with an arrogant and revenge-hungry protagonist, another greedy one, a beautiful woman who turns heads, an upright and honest mother, it makes us explore the different facets of the human being, even the darkest. A social fable in its own right, it does not hesitate to show relationships in all their complexity, to probe psychological distress, but also to put the heroes face to face with their contradictions and this is certainly what makes the series so exciting.
