Iga Świątek’s fatal match. The Pole said goodbye to the US Open

The quarterfinals of the US International Championships saw the tenth match between Iga Świątek and Jessica Pegula in the main series. Before this meeting, the Polish player had a 6-3 record against the American. In their last match, played in November as part of the WTA Finals 2023, our tennis player lost just one game. She was the favorite to enter Wednesday’s match.

Meanwhile, in the evening session at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Świątek played a very poor match. Our representative made a huge number of unforced errors over the course of 88 minutes. She lost deservedly 2:6, 4:6 and ended her participation in the US Open 2024 Grand Slam at the quarter-final stage.

Świątek started the match badly. Right from the start, she wasn’t serving at a high level. In the first and third games, she gave up her serve, making a double fault. Pegula, on the other hand, was very solid on the return. She did everything to keep the ball in play. The Pole couldn’t find her rhythm, which is why she was quickly losing 0:4.

In the final phase of the opening set, Świątek finally held her serve. However, there was no question of getting back into the game. The American guarded her advantage and did not intend to stop. The Pole had no weapon to make up for the loss. Besides, in the first set she finished only 3 balls and recorded as many as 19 unforced errors. In the eighth game, the tennis player from Buffalo worked out two set points and immediately decided the game.

Before the start of the second set, the ranking leader went for a toilet break. After the resumption of play, she held her serve, but it did not prove to be a breakthrough. In the third game, Pegula pressed on the return and after Świątek’s mistakes, she gained a break for 2:1.

At this point, there was hope that the Pole would still fight for a favorable result. When she managed to reduce the number of her own errors and play a few points wisely, the US representative easily lost her serve. Then Świątek, with difficulty, held her serve and even led 3:2.

But this evening did not belong to our representative. In the seventh game, Świątek found herself in trouble again. Pegula achieved her goal and won a break. Then she immediately jumped back to 5:3. The Pole held her serve, but after the change of sides, her opponent’s hand did not tremble. The home tennis player worked out three match points. The world’s number one racket repelled two of them. In the third, she broke her backhand and the match was over.

It was a poor performance by Świątek. The Pole finished 12 balls and had 41 unforced errors. In total, she won 49 of 114 points and tried for only one break. Pegula converted four of eight break points. She also recorded 12 winners and 22 own errors. She played solidly, which was enough to defeat the 2022 New York champion.

The victorious Pegula advanced to the semifinals of the US Open 2024 Grand Slam. This is her best singles result in a Grand Slam event. She will fight for the final in the Thursday evening session with the Czech Karolina Muchova.
