One of the most intense global video game phenomena, Minecraft will soon be getting a live-action film adaptation: the first trailer has just been released!

A long-standing project

Officially the best-selling video game in history, Minecraft is an unmissable and incredibly enduring phenomenon. It has existed since 2011, born under the leadership of a single man – Notch, aka Markus Persson – and is still here today and its infinite content continues to amaze. A huge steamroller, since passed into the Xbox Game Studios fold, which still has a lot to offer… and notably by way of a live-action film.

It must be said that this is a long-standing project: in 2012, Mojang Studios already received several offers from Hollywood for a film adaptation. In 2014, we learned that the firm had entered into discussions with Warner Bros. for a feature film.which however was not due to see the light of day before…. 2018.

Years and years later, with the Covid-19 pandemic having thrown a wrench into the production, “A Minecraft Movie” is finally showing its face, and this time, for good. The very first trailer has just been released and can be enjoyed right now in our video player, at the beginning of the article.

A big budget adaptation

To adapt a license as titanic as Minecraft, Warner Bros. did not skimp on the means and teamed up with the studio Legendary Pictures: The director is Jared Hess, author of the comedies The Brains and Super Nacho.among others, for a large-scale live-action project. By this, understand that we will have several flesh-and-blood characters, namely Garret, Genry, Natalie and Dawn, respectively played by Jason Momoa, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Emma Myers and Danielle Brooks. Together, they will discover the world of Minecraft while getting to know Steve, who will now take on the features of Jack Black.

We will thus find the great characteristics of the video game such as creativity based on bricks, llamas and a whole lore that fans know well: The realistic aspect allowed by the CGI, infused with a deeply cubic artistic direction, is enough to raise an eyebrow. In any case, we can trust many people behind the camera like the director of photography Enrique Chediak (nominated for a BAFTA), the “production designer” Grant Major (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) or the special effects supervisor Dan Lemmon (The Batman, The Jungle Book).

“A Minecraft Movie”, which should therefore be called “Minecraft: The Film” in France, will arrive in our French cinemas in 2025. So, first feeling?
