Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny Star in Netflix’s ‘Monsters’ Trailer

Ryan Murphy’s anthology series Monster is returning to Netflix this fall with Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story — and the first trailer is downright chilling.

Based on the true story of the Menéndez brothers, Lyle and Erik, who murdered their parents on Aug. 20, 1989, the series stars Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny as the slain José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez. Meanwhile, General Hospital alum Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch star as Lyle and Erik, respectively.

The new trailer for Monsters focuses on the duality of the troubled family’s private and personal lives. The short teaser shows the Menéndez family posing for a portrait where they’re meant to look picture perfect, but voiceovers reveal there’s more drama happening than meets the eye.

“I need to know what’s going on with you and the boys,” Sevigny’s Kitty says, to which José replies, “What do you mean?”

Kitty then insists she doesn’t want there to be “anymore lies between us,” and promises, “I won’t tell anyone,” hinting at a dark secret between the two.

Near the end of the teaser, the brothers are left alone, and they embrace shirtless in the dark. “It’s just us now,” one of them says as the sound of a gunshot rings out.

In addition to Bardem, Sevigny, Chavez and Koch, the cast also includes Nathan Lane, Ari Graynor, Leslie Grossman and Paul Adelstein.

The Menéndez brothers were convicted of murdering their parents in 1996, and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The prosecution argued that Erik and Lyle murdered Kitty and José for money, but the brothers have maintained their claims that their parents were physically, sexually and emotionally abusive.

In 2017, Lyle told Dateline“There are, like, two to three hundred parricide cases a year, where a parent is killed by a child. And they are almost all related to abuse. And they are almost all settled. This case they picked out as different.”

“And I think that it was very easy, because it was Beverly Hills and my father had a lot of money, to sort of sell this headline that these brothers killed for money,” he added at the time.

Monsters is the second installment in Murphy’s successful Monster anthology series, which focuses on fictional retellings of famous true crime cases. Season 1 focused on Jeffrey Dahmer, played by Evan Peters, and the victims of the serial killer. The show earned 13 Emmy nominations, including a best supporting actress win for Niecy Nash-Betts, as Glenda Cleveland, Dahmer’s neighbor who tried to warn police that he was dangerous long before he was caught.

All episodes of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story premiere Sept. 19 on Netflix.
