the unexpected reunion of Élie Semoun and Dieudonné in a show

VIDEO – For the first time since 2002, the two comedians spoke publicly on Guillaume Pley’s “Legend” program on YouTube.

Five months to the day after his interview with Elie Semoun, Guillaume Pley published a right of reply of Dieudonné in the form of a long exchange of more than an hour with the latter. “I had distanced myself from the mainstream media world, I was in my own bubble for about twenty years”declared the man who was on a joint list with Francis Lalanne in the last European and legislative elections.

Convicted 31 times, including for racial slurs and incitement to hatred, Dieudonné wore an electronic bracelet on his right ankle during his interview. At 58, he wants to be at peace and has been trying to show a new face for several months. “If I have hurt or offended people through my work, I sincerely apologize because that was not my goal. My goal was to make people laugh.”he assures.

“I have more respect for the artist he was than for the failed politician he is now.”

Elie Semoun in October 2013

Between 1992 and 1997, the duo Élie and Dieudonné were omnipresent and enjoyed great success. The two comedians continued their solo careers after their film Le Clone due to financial and then ideological disagreements. “I don’t understand his friends. […] “The Dieudo of today, I don’t like him and I don’t know him.”confided Élie Semoun in October 2013 in “On n’est pas couché” on France 2. “I have more respect for the artist he was than for the failed politician he is now.”

The whole paradox of this conflictual relationship is this friendly bond born during their childhood and which has never completely broken despite the deep differences. “We are childhood friends and we have had a lot of success together. We still see each other.”explained Élie Semoun in January 2014 on Europe 1. “I disapprove of all his nauseating ideas. In my book as in my sketch, I am critical of the racism he carries around and all his atrocious ideas. But he is my friend, I am sorry…” An unchanged speech in February 2017 in “Le Gros journal” by Mouloud Achour on Canal+.

“I also prefer you when you’re funny, but it’s been a long time since you made me laugh.”

Dieudonné to Elie Semoun

“We talk on the phone from time to time, but less so in the last year.”Dieudonné confided to Guillaume Pley on the show “Legend”. The comedian was keen to explain the financial sharing set up between them in the 90s and the reason why he received more than Élie Semoun. “It’s dishonest to say I scammed him.”he assured. Dieudonné revealed that he had been ready to relaunch their duet a year ago. “He was hesitant. We could have done something extraordinary on forgiveness and reconciliation.”

At the end of the interview, Guillaume Pley called Élie Semoun on video to allow the two former accomplices to talk to each other. For the first time since their reunion orchestrated by Thierry Ardisson on the set of “Tout le monde en parle” in November 2002 on France 2, they exchanged a few words together publicly on a show. A conversation where they teased each other like in the good old days.

“It’s not a blow from a shovel that you took, it’s all the tools in the garden”Elie Semoun said to Dieudonné. “I also prefer you when you’re funny, but it’s been a long time since you made me laugh.”teased the latter in the middle of an exchange of affectionate little insults. “One of the two hasn’t changed and one of the two has grown.”concluded the director of Ducobu between two laughs. “A childhood friend remains a childhood friend”Dieudonné admitted to Guillaume Pley after hanging up.
