Sonic 3 has just been revealed with a trailer revealing a lot of things, including an alliance between the blue hedgehog and Robotnik.
Although the first films Sonic Jeff Fowler’s The Last of Us were huge box office successes (respectively grossing $307 million and $402 million on budgets of around $90 million), it can’t be said that things were so easy on the critical front. Indeed, The two feature films released in 2020 and 2022 are far from having convinced the pressdespite some qualities (a little) and the presence of some great actors, in this case Jim Carrey and Idris Elba.
Moreover, we learned last April that Keanu Reeves had joined them as Shadow for Sonic 3. Between the reputation of the actor and the celebrity of this anti-hero, this obviously sounded like enticing news, even if we have the right to be afraid for the character. And precisely, the first trailer of Sonic 3 has just been released by Paramount Picturesand it gives us a first glimpse of what awaits us.
Sonic 3 spoils everything
Which just goes to show that making long trailers isn’t always a great idea… With almost three minutes on the clock, This trailer actually looks more like a summary of Sonic 3 than a real trailer. The Shadow threat, its origins, the alliance between Sonic and Robotnik as well as the final confrontation, in short, we seem to see pretty much everything that the film will offer to the spectators (except if a few twists are hidden here and there, which seems quite unlikely).
Even the revelation of Robotnik’s father’s arrival is spoiled at the end of the trailer, all supported by some rather ineffective jokes. We can nevertheless reassure ourselves with the different visuals of the fight in Sonic and Shadow which, in addition to possibly being the only real interest of the film, remains one of the most iconic oppositions in the universe.
So can we still believe it? In truth, why not. Despite everything that has been said above, It’s not impossible that the Sonic/Shadow rivalry will work well and draw us into the story. (especially with the voice of Keanu Reeves). The return of Jim Carrey as Robotnik and his alliance with Sonic could also bring something new, although this duo has already collaborated in some games like Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.
It will also be interesting to see how the origins of Shadow will be treated, he who is in the game series a creation of Professor Gerald Robotnik, Eggman’s grandfather. Regarding his release, Sonic 3 will be released in our dark rooms on December 25th 2024. Merry Christmas (or maybe not)…
