Agblemagnon, a first for adapted sport

Silver medalist in the shot put, Gloria Agblemagnon, who beat her personal record, won the first French adapted sports medal in athletics at these Paris Paralympic Games.

She chose the right moment to beat her personal record. While she had to settle for 8th place three years ago in Tokyo, after finishing 10th for her first Paralympic Games in 2016 in Rio, Gloria Agblemagnon therefore beat her record on Sunday at the Stade de France, with a throw of 14.43 m to take the silver medal in the shot put in the F20 category (mental disabilities). She finished behind the untouchable Sabrina Fortune, a British athlete who improved her world record by exceeding 15 meters for the first time (15.12 m), also taking the Paralympic record, also surpassed by Agblemagnon since it was 14.39 m. The 26-year-old native of Vierzon, who finished just off the podium last year at the World Para-Athletics Championships at the Charléty stadium, was very proud to have won the first medal in adapted sport.

“I can’t be happier”

“I’m happy. I’m the first woman from the French Federation of Adapted Sports to win a medal in athletics at the Paralympic Games. I’ve made history. I told myself that I was at home, I encouraged myself by telling myself that I’m a strong woman,” she then reacted, reports Ouest-France. “Super happy,” she completed a long and well-deserved lap of honour, at the end of which she expressed her happiness: “In training, I was breaking my records and it’s great to do it here too. I’m going to remember this moment until the end of my life. I couldn’t be happier.” After a first attempt at 13.31 m, Agblemagnon had to run behind Fortune, who immediately achieved 15.12 m, as well as the Ecuadorian Poleth Isamar Mendes Sanchez, with her first game at 14.31 m. But she held on, achieving 14.43m on her fourth attempt. A mark that was more than enough for her happiness.
