In the Boccia BC1 final, Aurélie Aubert won the first gold medal of the Paralympic Games this Monday afternoon. The Frenchwoman put in a great performance against a higher ranked opponent.

France has been waiting for forty years to win a medal in boccia since the sport arrived at the Paralympic Games, no matter the metal. Aurélie Aubert made sure to stop this bad streak! This Monday afternoon, the 27-year-old Frenchwoman won the gold medal in boccia (BC1) against Yee Ting Jeralyn Tan with a score of 5-4. Despite the gap in the score, Aurélie Aubert rather managed this final since she led 5-0 before her opponent found precision. And perhaps the Singaporean will even have some regrets since the French player made a mistake in the number of balls remaining for her opponent. As a result, the world number 2 had one last chance to secure a draw, which would mean extra time. But fortunately for Aurélie Aubert, Yee Ting Jeralyn Tan missed the boat and offered France’s first medal in boccia and not in just any metal!

Aubert: “I tried to stay calm”

Speaking to France TV, the new Olympic champion returned to her error of judgment. “I had trouble seeing on the screen and I was convinced that she had no more balls. I lacked a little lucidity at the end. I blamed myself because it was my mistake and if she had won on that, I would have been disappointed. When she missed her ball, I was relieved. I told myself that I had a lucky star above my head.” Aurélie Aubert took full advantage of her victory in the final, especially since she had not managed to beat her opponent in the group stage and Yee Ting Jeralyn Tan is not just anyone in the discipline (2nd in the world). “It’s great,” smiled the Frenchwoman. “The work has paid off, I have no words. I tried to stay calm and straight in my shoes during this final. I wanted to give the best of myself. I’m only 16th in the world so beating the No. 2 is huge.”
