Williams: Schumacher to replace Sargeant at Monza?

After his big crash in free practice for the Dutch Grand Prix, Logan Sargeant has lost some of the credibility he had left in the eyes of Williams bosses. They could well replace him at the Italian GP this weekend, with Mick Schumacher or Liam Lawson.

Next season, Logan Sargeant will be replaced by Carlos Sainz Jr at Williams. The 23-year-old American driver therefore knows that his days in F1 are numbered, especially since the three seats still officially available for 2025 (at Sauber, Racing Bulls and Mercedes) will not come back to him, barring a miracle. This may have put too much pressure on his shoulders, and during free practice for the Dutch Grand Prix, he made a big mistake, crashing his car into the fences, before seeing it catch fire.Another mistake from the American, who has only picked up one point since his F1 debut in 2023, and who finished sixteenth in the race on Sunday. So much so that Williams’ leaders are asking themselves whether they should wait until the end of the season and replace him at the next Grand Prix, in Italy this Sunday.

Two options on the table

According to Autosporttwo drivers are the favorites to take Sargeant’s seat at Monza if he were indeed dropped. The first is none other than Mick Schumacher. The 25-year-old German driver spent two years in F1, at Haas, where he won zero points for his debut in 2021 and twelve the following season, before being fired. Now a reserve driver at Mercedes and engaged with Alpine in Endurance, the son of the seven-time world champion dreams of returning to F1 one day. This weekend, he must nevertheless take part in the Austin round of the World Endurance Championship, and if it wants to recruit the driver, the Williams team will have to make it known quickly. (There will be no problem with Mercedes, however, which is powering Williams this season). The second option is Liam Lawson, the 22-year-old New Zealander, who took part in five Grands Prix last year (winning two points) with AlphaTauri to replace the injured Daniel Ricciardo. Christian Horner, the boss of Red Bull, where he is a reserve driver this year, said he was ready to talk to Williams if necessary. The ball is now in the English team’s court.
