Finistère: dozens of sea eels wash up on beaches: News

On the beaches of southern Finistère, dozens of conger eels are washing up on the beaches. Researchers have not yet determined the cause of this massacre but several hypotheses have already been put forward, reports the Huffingtonpost.

It’s not Jaws, but the event is still impressive. On the beaches of southern Finistère, dozens of conger eels, a type of large fish similar to a sea eel, have washed up.

In Concarneau, on the Sables Blancs beach, dozens of conger eel carcasses were found.Water activities, swimming, walks and all other leisure activities”, have been banned by the authorities while the coast is being cleaned. The same goes for the beaches of Pourzou, Combrit, Bénodot and Fouesnant.

200 failed congresses

Indeed, the more bodies there are, the more the health risk also increases. 200 conger eels were finally found, washed up on the beaches, according to France 3 Bretagne. “At first, we thought maybe fishermen had thrown them away,” says Samuel Iglesias, a research professor at the National Museum of Natural History. He adds: “DMy colleagues from Ifremer went to see on site, there is no trace of a hook and the phenomenon is much too massive for this to be the right explanation.”

The researcher suspects marine microalgae and their toxins to be the cause of this massacre. But one doubt remains: why would the latter only be fatal for conger eels? The French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer) should provide a detailed explanation this week.
