Sommières land, a “miracle” remedy against pests according to researchers

Researchers from the Nice University Hospital and the Marseille IHU have published a study according to which Sommières earth (or montmorillonite) would be very effective in easily killing bedbugs. Explanations.

It sounds like a miracle solution. On closer inspection, the idea does indeed seem very appealing: a natural powder, available in supermarkets, and easy to use to kill bedbugs.

Sommières earth is a mineral composed of silicate and hydrated magnesium. Pascal Delaunay and Jean-Michel Berenger tested it in an experiment, which proved conclusive. “We tested several types of powders, such as green clay, sodium bicarbonate, talc, diatomaceous earth or Fuller’s earth, and the results show that the latter kills bedbugs in 24 hours.” the two researchers told Agence France Presse.

Natural clay dries out insects completely until they are killed. It is for this same virtue that it is known as a very effective stain remover. Sommières earth is sold everywhere in supermarkets.

To use it, simply sprinkle your box spring with this product. After 24 hours, all you have to do is wash your sheets at 60 degrees. Fuller’s earth works like diatomaceous earth, except that the latter takes longer to take effect and would be dangerous to breathe. According to the two researchers, Fuller’s earth is “respectful of both the environment and human health”.

The land of Sommières takes its name from the quarry where it was first discovered and historically exploited: in Sommières in the Gard.

The quarry was operated in Sommières for a century, before finally stopping in 1981. The powder is now extracted in Spain and Morocco.
