Emmanuel Macron wanted to fracture the New Popular Front (NFP) by isolating La France Insoumise (LFI). But perhaps the opposite is happening, with members of the left-wing alliance uniting against him. On Monday, August 26, the President of the Republic officially rejected Lucie Castets’ candidacy for Matignon, in the name of “institutional stability”In return, he asked the Socialist Party (PS), the French Communist Party (PCF) and the Ecologists to find “paths” to cooperate with the three parties of the presidential camp (Ensemble, MoDem and Horizons), the Liberties, Independents, Overseas and Territories (LIOT) group, the Radicals and the UDI. De facto excluding the “insoumis”, who are not invited to the Elysée for the new consultations which begin on Tuesday in order to appoint a Prime Minister, in the same way as the National Rally and Eric Ciotti.

The Elysée’s statement had the effect of a bomb within the NFP, where superlatives poured in all evening to denounce a “denial” of democracy. First targeted, Jean-Luc Mélenchon immediately reacted: “The President of the Republic has just created a situation of exceptional gravity. The popular and political response must be rapid and firm.”wrote the founder of LFI on X. “In no democracy in the world is there a right of veto by the President of the Republic over the outcome of elections,” said the movement’s coordinator, Manuel Bompard.

The president of the PS group in the Senate, Patrick Kanner, says “scandalized” and denounces the “assumed cynicism” from the tenant of the Elysée, recalling that the Macronists only obtained a third of the votes in the early legislative elections. “Emmanuel Macron talks about stability, but he’s the one who breaks the fuse”adds the socialist. The leader of the PCF, Fabien Roussel, considers that« “It opens a very serious crisis for the country, while the French have expressed a desire for change during two important elections”.

“Chaos, instability, that’s him”

The national secretary of the environmentalists, Marine Tondelier, judges, for her part, “Shameful to invoke stability after surprise dissolution and summer of obstruction”The pure and simple exclusion of LFI from the consultations shocks the left-wing partners. Emmanuel Macron « deports the perimeter of the republican arc”, points out the Green MEP David Cormand, who recalls that the presidential camp participated in the Republican front. “Chaos, instability, that’s him,” accuses the deputy (ecologist and social) of the Somme François Ruffin. “We are faced with a President of the Republic who wants to be president, prime minister and party leader all at once.
