NFL insider addresses Jerry Jones’ interest in Bill Belichick amid Mike McCarthy hot seat speculation

The pressure continues to grow for Mike McCarthy in Dallas as the Cowboys lost their third home game of the season Sunday in a 47-9 blowout against the Lions. Although owner Jerry Jones said postgame that he is “not considering” making a coaching change at the moment, many believe McCarthy’s seat is getting hotter.

The Cowboys are 3-3 and if they continue on their current track, Jones could have a different tone at the end of the year. NFL insider Jordan Schultz speculated that former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick could be a candidate if Dallas does decide to go a different direction.

“While owner Jerry Jones remains committed to Mike McCarthy, many around the league wonder if Dallas could become the primary landing spot for Bill Belichick this offseason, should the #Cowboys decide to make a change,” Schultz wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “According to multiple sources, Belichick has a ‘really great’ relationship with the Jones family.”

Belichick coached the Patriots for 24 seasons before the two sides mutually agreed to part ways this offseason. His six Super Bowl victories as a head coach are an NFL record, and he has a 333-178 career record.

McCarthy is in the final year of his contract, so it would be easy for Dallas to wait until the end of the year to let him go. He is in his fifth season as the Cowboys coach with a 45-28 record in that span.

Dallas has finished 12-5 and made the playoffs in each of the past three seasons but McCarthy has just a 1-3 record in the postseason. The way things currently look this year, he might not even get an opportunity to improve it.

Mike McCarthy will look to fix things quickly to avoid getting the axe this offseason. He has an upcoming by week to address the issues before facing the 49ers on Oct. 27.
