Are they on or are they off? That’s what Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin‘s pals are reportedly asking themselves lately as the long-engaged couple’s relationship is called into question. The low-key duo prefers their privacy, but it sounds like their friends are getting sick of the ambiguity, too.

“Their friends have been tolerating all this back and forth and dealing with all these cryptic excuses for what feels like years,” an In Touch Weekly source claimed. “Chris and Dakota are both very paranoid, so they don’t want to tell people what’s going on and will act really defensive if anyone asks, but then when there’s a crisis that all goes out the window and they’ll call everyone up to ask for advice.”

The latest round of questions comes on the heels of a mid-August report that they split. An insider told the Daily Mail that Martin has “now accepted the relationship is over – and it’s best to move on” from Johnson. The paparazzi were also quick to note that the 35-year-old actress was not wearing her stunning emerald engagement ring. “Chris and Dakota have tried desperately hard over the past few months to make their relationship work,” the source continued. “They’ll always have love for each other but they’ve both come to the conclusion the relationship cannot be sustained long-term.”

But hold up! People magazine was quick to debunk that rumor with an official response from their representatives. “They are happily together,” the spokesperson told the media outlet. Body language experts even weighed in with their opinion of Martin and Johnson’s seven-year relationship. Dakota’s body language makes her look distant in some of these poses, while Chris seems to throw her some looks of concern,” body language expert Judi James explained to the Daily Mail in August. She was looking at snapshots from their Mexican vacation and didn’t have a happy report. “Their tactile behavior doesn’t look easy-going and natural,” she added.

Their friends reportedly find the nature of their relationship “very draining” and “so immature,” per In Touch Weekly. They just want them to decide once and for all — on or forever off. The source summed up, “Their friends were sympathetic at first, but now it just feels like a waste of time since they’ll spend hours listening and giving advice only to see them turn around and ignore it.”
