Socialist Party: but when will the next congress take place?

the essential
François Hollande is calling for a PS Congress to be debated next year, it could take place a little later.

The revolt began this summer during the socialist summer universities in . Olivier Faure’s opponents then gave their voice during a highly publicized press conference to demand the holding of a congress of the movement. “The statutes of the Socialist Party are very clear, a congress must be organized six months after the holding of legislative elections,” former MP Patrick Mennucci assured us. And who says congress says election of a new national secretary.

On Monday, François Hollande during an interview on LCP joined the movement declaring himself for a new congress of the Socialist Party at the beginning of 2025 and specifying: “We need a new figure to lead the Socialist Party, to allow this gathering and this opening” towards Public Square and the social democratic left.

An announcement “in a few weeks”

In the entourage of Olivier Faure, the current leader of the PS, no one is in a hurry. “If there is a new dissolution in June, we are not going to have a congress every six months”, sweeps away one of his close associates, the European deputy Pierre Jouvet who assures us that a congress will indeed take place but during of the year 2025, not necessarily at the start of the year: “If the National Council (the party’s Parliament, editor’s note) agrees on a date, if there is consensus, nothing obliges us to hold such tight deadlines. And to emphasize that in the event of legislative elections caused by a dissolution, the rules will be even more vague. In the meantime, the party’s number 2 says that an announcement could be made “within a few weeks”…
