Teleworking and disconnection: the ETUC calls on the European Commission to quickly launch a legislative initiative

It all started with a European Parliament resolution in 2021, which called for new European legislation to “protect the right of employees to disconnect”. On this subject, the European social partners then took control without however reaching an agreement. In November 2023, certain employers’ organizations actually left the negotiating table by refusing “to present any text”, regrets the European Trade Union Confederation, in a press release at the end of November 2023. The latter requests on the same occasion that the European Commission “immediately legislate to ensure adequate working conditions for people working remotely”. According to the Europe agency, Employment Commissioner Nicolas Schmit assured MEPs that such an initiative would be taken on December 14, 2023.
