For the day of Tuesday October 8, 2024, Météo has issued an ORANGE “rainfloods” alert from 3:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The department will also go into YELLOW “thunderstorm” alert from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Description of the weather event:

A Cévennes episode begins in the evening of this Monday and intensifies during the night from Monday to Tuesday, potentially resulting in significant amounts of rain on the terrain.

Then, in the second part of the night from Monday to Tuesday and until the afternoon, the activity gradually shifts towards PACA, with on the one hand stormy rises which are organized coming from the Mediterranean, and on the other hand On the other hand, there is an accumulation of rain on the Alpine terrain.

A rain-storm axis is therefore expected across the entire region, with a significant impact on the Alpes-Maritimes in the second part of the night, around 3 a.m.

Unstable rainfall is expected from the second part of the night across the entire PACA region. Strong storms are likely to impact the coastline and the middle country of the Alpes-Maritimes, potentially resulting in heavy accumulations (60 to 80mm) in a short time. In Mercantour, the risk of storms is lower, but the accumulation of rain is significant over time, potentially leading to quantities approaching 80 to 100 mm in around ten hours. The maximum intensities announced are of the order of 15 to 20 mm/hour.

Two areas should be particularly monitored:

Area between the Estérel massif and the coast : a risk of stationary thunderstorms could lead to significantly increased accumulations.

Middle country of the Alpes-Maritimes (on the first reliefs) : local accumulations of up to 100 mm are possible.

The episode will move from west to east and will evacuate through Italy and Roya late tomorrow.

A swell phenomenon could also occur, without the thresholds for triggering vigilance being exceeded.

Concerning watercourses, moderate reactions are expected throughout the territory and are subject to monitoring.

An improvement in weather conditions is expected during the afternoon.

Due to current forecasts, the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes has taken the decision to close nurseries, schools, middle schools and high schools throughout the department for the entire day of Tuesday October 8, 2024.
