Sinner overwhelms Daniel at the ATP in Shanghai: Jannik wins 6-1, 6-4 (but the crowd goes crazy for his gentlemanly gesture with the ball boy)

A training session for Sinner against Daniel

(Marco Calabresi) A training session filmed worldwide, a set of free lessons for the poor Japanese Taro Daniel, who gave it his all in the second but had to slowly give in to the world number 1. Devastating, Jannik Sinner, but kind enough to worry after the decisive break in the second set of conditions of a ball boy hit shortly before by the opponent’s serve. If in Beijing the adventure began with two comeback victories after losing the first set (against Jarry and Safiullin), in Shanghai the debut was a show. A short show, which lasted only an hour and 18′, in which the world number 1 had fun, leafing through the book of spells and rendering his opponent defenseless. Power, flight, forehand, backhand, with the lob: with the 6-1 6-4 against Daniel, Sinner has gained access to the third round of the penultimate Masters 1000 of the year, where he will face the Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverrywith which there is only one precedent, the first round in Melbourne in the 2023 Australian Open won 6-3 6-2 6-2 by the blue. A match that will be played tomorrow without a day’s rest, precisely because the organization allowed Sinner and Alcaraz (who had liquidated the Chinese Shang before the Jannik match) to arrive direct from Beijing and the scoreboard needs to be realigned.

«Today went very well, I moved in the right way and I’m happy with the victory – these are Sinner’s first words after the match -. Last year I also had a similar situation, arriving from Beijing. I feel in good shape physically and this is very important: I will try to improve for tomorrow, when I will find a totally different opponent. The new team? It takes some time to get to know each other better but I already feel very comfortable with them.”

Sinner took the first set home in 21 minutes, and for Daniel (number 93 in the world rankings) it was something similar to torture: Jannik earned the break point with a great backhand to go 3-1, immediately transformed due to a mistake by the Japanese. A break became double immediately afterwards, with the 0-40 gained with a volley that pinched the line and the game concluded with a forehand winner. A forehand volley executed with disarming ease gave Sinner two set points: the first was good, with another volley this time only placed on the other side of the net.

The match risked being even shorter than it was: Daniel canceled a break point in the first game but did nothing in the third, the game in which Jannik, before sitting down, proved himself to be a boy of extraordinary training and education, going to check that the young girl shot by Daniel was okay. But Daniel continued to take the balls, especially for whom in the fourth game not even two smashes were enough to win a point. The defense was impressive, the backhand was impressive to take the ball for another break canceled like the other three in the fifth game. Sinner also did very well with his serve, the shot with which he closed the match: twelve aces of which nine in the second set, 78% of first serves on the court, only 6 points lost out of 38 when the first served came in. And with this I am 250 victories at ATP levelat 23 years old.
