After the deadly hurricane Hélène, Isaac, then Joyce, it is now Kirk. Became a major category 3 hurricane – and for the moment located in the middle of the Atlantic – it should have consequences in next week, as we explained on Wednesday in a previous article.

The remains of Kirk are expected in France between Wednesday 9, Thursday 10 and Friday 11 October 2024. This future ex-hurricane could even become the next storm Bérénice In France.

With, as a key, lots of wind (possibly at more than 120 km/h on the West, Channel and Atlantic coasts) and lots of rainencore.

A Mediterranean episode next week

“What is happening is quite classic”, summarizes withactu.fr meteorologist Yann Amice. But the phenomenon should nevertheless be monitored very closely. regarding the power of this hurricane and what the majority of weather models “see” at this time frame, although it is still a little distant.

After a rather calm weekenda first depression this Monday, October 7, 2024 will already bring a rainy deterioration to a large part of the country (including the perimeter of the Mediterranean with the establishment of a Mediterranean episode Monday morning).

But it is from this Wednesday October 9, 2024 that the elements could well unleash in the west of the country, mainly, with regard to the wind. Because rare will be the regions spared from the rain (again), next week.

“Extra-tropical transition” Tuesday morning

Hurricane Kirk, which ultimately will not have made landfall, is expected to make its “extra-tropical transition” north of the Azores on Tuesday morning, October 8, 2024. To put it simply, it is the transformation d’un cyclone tropical en cyclone extra-tropical during its advance towards the middle latitudes.

“A special moment,” agrees Yann Amice. If it loses its intensity while flying over colder waters, “Kirk can nevertheless continue with a new dynamic and surprise us in its trajectory,” he warns.

A moment which also makes weather forecasts much more delicate, hence the spatial and temporal divergences that we can observe on the chronology of this phenomenon.

Uncertainty still remains over the exact route that this future ex-Hurricane Kirk will take, but in the vast majority of scenarios, its remnants will impact the west of France with strong winds. The United Kingdom is also expected to be affected by severe weather.

A large, very hollow system from Wednesday (and rain, again)

The concern remains in the fact that Kirk should be taken back in the middle of next week in the (traditional) western circulation. Then slip “with still its power in wind and humidity”, into a vast depression system well established, from next Monday on the near Atlantic.

Heavy accumulations of rain are also expected between the south of England, Brittany and , according to weather models. (©WeatherNCo with Meteologix)

According to weather models, this would result, between Wednesday October 9 and Thursday October 10, 2024, in a vast, very hollow system, at approximately 970 hectopascalslocated off the coast of Brittany. And therefore very strong agitation with stormy winds and significant amounts of rain.

This, while it had been 25 years since France had known such a rainy month of September
