“I was with a man who spent his time denigrating me”: the touching confidences of Marion Bartoli about her fight against anorexia

On the occasion of the release of her new book, Marion Bartoli spoke to the Parisian about the eating disorders she suffered from. The former tennis player notably confided having been the victim of a toxic companion.

She is one of the French’s favorite sportswomen. In 2013, Marion Bartoli made French tennis history by winning the prestigious Wimbledon tournament. A few weeks after achieving this feat, she ended her career. Physically and mentally worn out, the champion explained that she could no longer continue. “It’s time for me to end my career. My body can no longer handle it all”she confided.

“I’ve had a lot of injuries since the beginning of the year. I’ve been on the tour for so long, and I really pushed and gave everything during this Wimbledon. I felt like I had used up all the energy remaining in my body I made my dream come true and it will stay with me forever.”continued Marion Bartoli.

Asked by The ParisianTuesday October 1, Marion Bartoli returned to her fight against anorexia. A year after her triumph at Wimbledon, the tennis player met a man who led her to anorexia. “I was with a man who spent his time denigrating me. He kept telling me: ‘Look at the girl in the street, she’s thinner than you.'”she explained. These daily remarks pushed the young woman to begin a draconian diet, consuming only 400 calories per day to “fit into a 36”.

I developed problems without realizing it. I was in total denial. This is the very principle of this disease. The brain puts in place a defense mechanism to continue to restrict itself.she continued, before returning to her hospitalization in 2016 after being excluded for “medical reasons” of the Wimbledon senior tournament. “It was a shock… You can take everything away from me, but not tennis! I told myself that I had to stop killing myself. I was then hospitalized for three monthsshe revealed. Confidences without tongue in cheek.
