VIDEO – The first stirrings were heard in the Hemicycle barely two minutes after the Prime Minister spoke.

This speech in front of the deputies must have seemed like a balancing act for the head of government, and he must not have been disappointed… Michel Barnier had barely delivered the first minutes of his general policy speech at the National Assembly that deputies from the New Popular Front (NFP) brandished their voter cards.

Opposition deputies criticize the arrival of Michel Barnier at Matignon, believing that the position should go to a left-wing figure after their alliance came first in the last legislative elections. The Prime Minister had started by quoting General de Gaulle when the boos and the first signs of protests were heard.

Michel Barnier, without a majority in the National Assembly, should use the rest of his general policy speech to ask for a “ effort » in order to reduce public spending and increase taxes in a “ targeted » in the context of a spiraling deficit. He will not seek a vote of confidence from the deputies, like his predecessors Élisabeth Borne and Gabriel Attal, deprived like him of an absolute majority.
