The right will accept “temporary, exceptional and fair” tax increases in return for “massive savings”, announced Tuesday the leader of the Les Républicains (LR) deputies Laurent Wauquiez, who denounced a “catastrophic” legacy of previous governments.
“Is there a real effort being made on spending and is what is being asked for on taxes temporary, exceptional and fair? If so, we will support. If it is no, we will contribute” to improving the 2025 budget, declared Laurent Wauquiez on RTL, a few hours before Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s general policy declaration before the National Assembly.
The priority must “first and foremost focus on the fight against the waste of public money”, he insisted, emphasizing the intention of his group to “put on the table avenues to make 30 billion savings.”
Faced with a deficit which could exceed 6% of GDP this year, far from the 3% set by Brussels, Michel Barnier should announce Tuesday afternoon in his general policy speech, at the same time as spending reductions, an increase in certain taxes on big businesses and the richest.
Laurent Wauquiez, his camp’s potential candidate for 2027, attacked former minister Gérald Darmanin who had claimed “not to be able to support a government which would increase taxes”.
“There is a rather shocking side to seeing political figures, ministers who have held responsibilities for seven years, who have largely contributed to the catastrophic budgetary situation in which we are today, giving lessons to a Prime Minister who is coming to arrive,” he said.
“We inherit a catastrophic situation. For seven years, everything was done,” he insisted, while his party and the Macronists are now part of the same ruling coalition.
