Hamas Leader in Lebanon Killed in Israeli Strike in South of Country

Hamas announced Monday morning that the movement’s leader in Lebanon, Fateh Sharif Abou al-Amin, was killed in an Israeli strike on the Al-Bass refugee camp, near Tyre. Abu al-Amin, also known as Fathi al-Sharif, was president of the UNRWA teachers’ association in Lebanon. Hamas described him as the leader of the movement in Lebanon and a member of the leadership abroad. According to the Hamas statement, al-Amin was eliminated along with several members of his family. The Lebanese National News Agency reported that this was the first time this refugee camp had been attacked.

Al-Amin was suspended from his teaching post at UNRWA last March for a period of three months, following what was described as a violation of the agency’s procedures. On October 7, he rushed to salute the massacre perpetrated by Hamas by writing: “Allah Akbar”.

After its suspension, dozens of activists demonstrated against this decision in front of the UNRWA offices in Beirut. During this demonstration, al-Amin declared: “Work will never humiliate us. Work will never lead us to give up all our rights and our dignity. I have said, I say and I will continue to say that “Belonging to Palestine, to our people, to the West Bank, to Gaza and to all of Palestine is a doctrinal belonging.”

Western South Lebanon is a main area of activity for Hamas’ southern Lebanon branch, and its militants are responsible for most of the firing towards Nahariya and Krayot towns in Israel.

Separately, the IDF struck an apartment in a residential building in southwest Beirut overnight, marking the first attack outside the Dahiyeh neighborhood in the Lebanese capital since the start of the war. In Lebanon, at least four deaths are reported.
