Mariska Hargitay bears the emotional scars of the crimes recounted in “New York, Special Unit”

We do not emerge unscathed from 25 years of New York, special unitand Mariska Hargitay knows something about it. In an interview with Selena Gomez for the magazine Interviewthe one whose name is associated with the character of Olivia Benson admits that some of the crimes narrated in the legal series deeply traumatized her.

“When I started the series, I wasn’t aware of how much it was going to impact me,” she confided. “My husband (Peter Hermann) always says my first question when I go anywhere is: ‘What’s the crime rate here?’ So it’s always in the back of my mind. »

An awareness

The actress explains that she sometimes had difficulty protecting herself emotionally in the face of the volume of true stories on which the series is inspired. This is also what pushed her to create the Joyful Heart Foundation, an association which supports victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse.

Mariska Hargitay believes that the character of Olivia Benson was necessary to the culture when the series began, in 1999, to “talk about these things, to fight for the survivors and to believe the victims.” Nevertheless, Mariska Hargitay remains faithful to the post, and the 26th season of New York, special unit is scheduled to debut October 3 on NBC.
