Spoiler alert: fans of Titanic will be disappointed. This Monday, during a question-and-answer session organized at the preview of his next film Lee, Kate Winslet has lifted the veil on the filming of the iconic door scene in Titanicthe 1997 Oscar-winning masterpiece.

Since the release of the film, the public is still wondering how Jack Dawson, played by a young Leonardo DiCapriowas able to stay in the icy water, clinging to this piece of floating wood, while Rose Dewitt Bukater, played by Winslet, survived.

Asked about this cult scene, the actress revealed that the water was actually not as deep as one might have believed. She says it was easy for her to get out of the tank to go to the bathroom between takes, thus demystifying the dramatic intensity of the moment on screen.

A myth that collapses

Discussing the countless questions asked to Leonardo DiCaprio, now 49, about this scene, Kate Winslet joked about the reality of filming: “The water was up to my waist. Leo, I’m afraid I have to admit, he… was on his knees. I shouldn’t say that, James Cameron will definitely call me,” she says with humor.

At the star of Holiday also described the setting of the shoot, carried out according to her “in an infinity pool” from which water constantly flowed. “We could hear the sound of the water all the time,” she recalls, adding that the crew was completely absorbed in the last 22 minutes of the film, as the sound of the waves became so omnipresent.

The first viewing

During the exchange, Kate Winslet also shared an anecdote about the first time she saw Titanic at the cinema. Unable to attend the official previews, the actress slipped incognito into a New York cinema, accompanied by two friends. She says she missed the London premiere due to severe food poisoning, leaving her in hospital. “It was really strange,” she confides.

As for the American premiere, a tragic event held it back. She was due to attend her then-boyfriend’s funeral: “Obviously I couldn’t miss that. So I missed the whole release of Titanic. Maybe it’s the universe’s way of reminding me to always prioritize the essential,” she added with emotion.

The last time Winslet spoke with such sincerity was during an interview for Porterlast February. She expressed the discomfort felt in the face of sudden fame, just after the phenomenal success of the film. “I felt like I was expected to be a certain way, to embody something specific. The media intrusion was so heavy that my life became unpleasant,” she recalls. Then she concluded: “But Titanic continues to make so many people happy. The only time I’m like, ‘Oh my God, hide,’ is when I’m on a boat somewhere! »
