: a man imprisoned for throwing caustic soda on his partner’s face

A 40-year-old man was imprisoned on Wednesday for throwing caustic soda in his partner’s face, while waiting to appear in criminal court on Thursday, the () public prosecutor’s office announced.

“He is accused of having thrown soda on the face and body of his partner,” wrote Loïs Raschel, public prosecutor in Libourne, in a press release, without further details on the circumstances.

Risks of eye damage

The suspect must be judged Thursday at 1:30 p.m. “as part of an immediate appearance procedure for charges of intentional violence against a spouse or partner leading to incapacity for work for more than eight days,” according to the prosecution. Pending the hearing, the forty-year-old was placed in pre-trial detention today.

According to a source close to the investigation, the suspect sprayed his victim with a household product in a village near Libourne. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also called caustic soda, is a chemical that poses risks of skin corrosion or irritation, as well as eye damage.
