Formula 1 | Official: Adrian Newey signs with Aston Martin F1

It’s official: Adrian Newey is not done with Formula 1 and is certainly offering himself a new but also final challenge by accepting the huge offer from Lawrence Stroll and Aston Martin F1, having not found common ground with Ferrari and Frédéric Vasseur, as the Frenchman revealed on Monday.

From next year, he will become the chief technical partner of the Silverstone team and, as announced by Lawrence Stroll, a shareholder of the team, which will be powered by Honda from 2026.

At almost 66 years old (on December 26), the British engineer has already had all the successes in Formula 1 with the single-seaters he designed for Williams and McLaren in the 1990s and 2000s, before doing the same thing with the Red Bull Racing team from 2010 to 2013 but also from 2021 to 2023. It remains to be seen what 2024 will have in store for his latest creation for the Austrian team.

It was after 19 years at Red Bull, punctuated by seven drivers’ world championship titles and six constructors’ titles, that Newey announced his departure in the spring. He left little doubt that he did not want to retire for good and will therefore remain in England for a few more years in the premier class of motorsport.

“I am delighted to be joining Aston Martin F1 Team. I have been very inspired and impressed by the passion and commitment that Lawrence brings to everything he does” Newey said. “Lawrence is committed to building a world-class team.”

“He is the only majority owner of a team to be actively involved in the sport. His commitment is demonstrated by the development of the new AMR Technology Campus and Wind Tunnel at Silverstone, which are not only state-of-the-art but whose layout creates an ideal environment in which to work.”

“With great partners like Honda and Aramco, they have all the infrastructure needed to make Aston Martin a world champion team, and I look forward to helping make that happen.”

“The same desire” between Stroll and Newey

Lawrence Stroll made no secret of his delight at signing Newey, which he described as the biggest news for the team since its inception: “Adrian is the best in the world at what he does – he is at the top of his game – and I am incredibly proud that he is joining Aston Martin F1.”

“This is the biggest news since the Aston Martin name returned to the sport and a further demonstration of our ambition to build a Formula 1 team capable of challenging for world championships.”

“As soon as Adrian became available, we knew we had to make this happen. Our initial conversations confirmed that we shared a desire to collaborate on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

“Adrian is a competitor and one of the most competitive people I have ever met. When he saw what we have built at Silverstone – our incredible AMR Technology Campus, the talented group of people we have brought together and the brand new wind tunnel – he quickly understood what we are trying to achieve.”

“We are serious, and so is he. Adrian shares our hunger and ambition, he believes in this project and he will help us write the next chapter in the history of Aston Martin F1.”
