Top 14 – Bayonne: Aviron loses Tuilagi due to injury

Two days after the warm-up match against Biarritz Olympique (42-5), Aviron Bayonnais announced that Manu Tuilagi would be sidelined for several weeks. The Englishman is suffering from a broken hand.

A match. Like several other teams, Aviron Bayonnais played only one preparation match at the start of the 2024-2025 Top 14 season. It was Saturday against Biarritz Olympique with a victory (42-5). Nevertheless, AB would probably have liked to exchange this success a few weeks before the restart for an empty infirmary. Two days ago, the 12th in the last championship certainly won but lost some players to injury. And in particular its recruit Manu Tuilagi (33 years old). This Monday, Aviron Bayonnais announced that the English international would not be fit to play the first match of the season against Perpignan due to a broken hand. According to the press release published by the club, the three-quarter center would be unavailable “between 6 and 8 weeks.”

A hard blow for rowing

This information is in any case very bad news for Aviron Bayonnais who logically expected a lot from their new recruit with 60 selections with the XV de la Rose. The player, announced last March by “AB” was obviously highly anticipated in the Basque Country. In its press release, the club did not specify the modalities of care concerning Manu Tuilagi and a possible date of operation. His return will obviously depend on his recovery and his feelings. For the moment, we do not know if Aviron plans to recruit other players to compensate for these unforeseen events, especially since the Englishman was not the only player affected during this preparation match. Guillaume Martocq (ankle sprain), Guillaume Rouet (hamstring pain) and Swan Cormenier (acromioclavicular sprain) also had some physical problems but, according to the club, Gérard Fraser should be able to count on them on September 7 against USAP.
