Lady Louise Windsor in the footsteps of Elizabeth II?

While her passion for carriage driving brought her closer to her late grandfather, Prince Philip, Lady Louise Windsor’s future career could well see her following in the footsteps of her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. According to the British tabloid The Sunthe eldest daughter of Edward and Sophie of Edinburgh, is said to have “fallen under the spell of the Army Cadets” on the campus of the University of St Andrews, where she has been studying English literature for the past two years, and is considering a future in the British Defence Forces. Since the Second World War and the enlistment of Elizabeth, then heir to the throne, in the women’s branch of the army, no woman from the Windsor clan has enlisted under the colours.

An active member of the St Andrews Army Officer Training Corps, a section of the British Army Reserve that trains college students for combat, Charles III’s niece would speak openly of her “desire to serve the country and the king,” confided to the Sun a classmate of Lady Louise.

On her LinkedIn page, the 20-year-old student states this orientation by declaring “wanting to pursue a military, diplomatic or legal career”. Royal ambitions that are part of a family tradition that has until now been very masculine, unlike other European monarchies, where women like Princess Astrid of Belgium and, more recently, Leonor of Spain proudly wear the uniform.

In addition to her uncles, King Charles III and Prince Andrew, Lady Louise can count on the examples of her cousins Princes William and Harry, who each served their country for several years. The Duke of Sussex took part in two missions during the war in Afghanistan. It is not certain, however, that the young woman seeks advice from her own father, Prince Edward, who enlisted in the British Navy in 1987 before giving up… after only four months.

While waiting to serve her country, the sister of the Earl of Wessex is continuing her studies in English literature for another year at the University of St Andrews, where her cousin, Prince William, and his wife Kate studied between 2001 and 2005. A renowned institution where Lady Louise leads an almost normal life, working as a waitress between classes or giving tutoring lessons on behalf of the Tutor the Nation association. A sense of service and duty that would make Elizabeth II proud.
