Karen Palomeque seeks to make history at the Paralympics: “I have no limits or obstacles”

Colombian athlete Karen Palomeque was born with a condition that reduces strength and affects the balance on the left side of her body, but through hard work this Paralympic athlete has beaten life’s obstacles to become one of the best in the world.. Los Informantes spoke with her before traveling to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“I have no limits or obstacles. I think that the Karen of today says that I have no limits,” said Palomeque about her condition known as hemiparesis, which affects one in every thousand people in the world.

The world star of Paralympic athletics knows no limits. In addition to being a collector of gold medals, she is an expert in overcoming barriers on the track, but above all in life.

“I have a disability, and I don’t think that’s an obstacle for what Karen Palomeque is now. The disability does exist, but we have to work on it so that it’s less noticeable on the track,” she said on Los Informantes.

Karen Tatiana Palomeque Moreno was born in Medellin, she is 30 years old and has so many medals that you have no idea how many. She She rarely talks about the causes of the condition that now has her competing in Paralympic sport, but her mother does.

“She was born in a taxi, when we arrived at San Vicente, a lot of time had passed, then the doctors decided to cut her umbilical cord inside the taxi, while all that time passed and they took her to give her oxygen, a lot of time had already passed,” said her mother, María Eugenia Palomeque.

Doctors told her that her daughter’s brain had been deprived of oxygen for a few seconds, hence her condition, but she decided to raise her as if nothing had happened.

It is no exaggeration to say that Karen is a phenomenon, having won more than 15 medals in her favourite colour: gold. Over the last year and a half she has swept everything she competed in and to top it off she was chosen as the Para Athlete of the Year at the Panam Sports Awards, something like a Golden Ball, but for athletics.

The paisa will compete in the Paralympic Games in the T37 category of para athleticswhere athletes with moderately limited movement and coordination on one side of the body participate.

When will you compete at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games?

Karen Palomeque will make her Olympic debut on August 30, 2024, in the 100-meter T37 discipline; in the 200 meters T37 he will compete on September 2 and will finish his participation on September 5 with the 400 meters T37.
