How Jean-Luc Mélenchon, in a single statement, put pressure on the presidential camp… and the left

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, during a speech at Amfis, the party’s summer gathering, in Châteauneuf-sur-Isère (Drôme), on August 23, 2024. SOPHIE RODRIGUEZ FOR “THE WORLD”

At a poker table, Jean-Luc Mélenchon would be a formidable opponent. With a simple sentence, the founder of La France insoumise (LFI) reshuffled the cards of the political game, suspended, since July 7, until Emmanuel Macron nominates a future prime minister. In Châteauneuf-sur-Isère (Drôme), where the summer universities of La France insoumise (Amfis) were held, Jean-Luc Mélenchon challenged the presidential camp.

If a government led by Lucie Castets, the candidate of the left-wing coalition, “did not include any “rebellious” ministers, do you commit to not voting for censure and to allowing him to implement the program” of the New Popular Front (NFP), he asked on TF1. The day before, the resigning Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, had announced that his group in the National Assembly would adopt “an immediate motion of censure” in the case of LFI ministers. A position shared by his allies from MoDem and Horizons.

Officially, Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s surprise statement delighted NFP members. “This is good news because it turns the trap around. It deprives the Macronists of their pretext. It is up to them to explain why they refuse to respect the suffrage of the French.”, explains the first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), Olivier Faure. “If it can make it easier to be appointed to Matignon, that’s fine with me. It’s not all calculation! If we can have an NFP government, certainly with conditions that are not exactly those at the start, I’ll take it.”adds Laurent Baumel, PS deputy for Indre-et-Loire.

Is Jean-Luc Mélenchon paving the way for a “support without participation”like the Communist Party, which had refused to enter the Popular Front government of Léon Blum in 1936? According to one of the party leaders, the hypothesis had been discussed at the time when the ecologists, the socialists and the communists were considering putting forward the economist Laurence Tubiana, a candidacy rejected by LFI.

In Châteauneuf-sur-Isère, the “insoumis” refused to definitively renounce entry into a left-wing executive. “We ask the question: it is up to the Macronists to answer whether the problem is La France Insoumise or the NFP program.”dismisses MEP Manon Aubry, who does not want to “put the cart before the horse”. Warned in advance, Lucie Castets refuses to consider this option. While welcoming “Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s constructive position”she repeated, Saturday at the Amfis, that “The four forces of the NFP were intended to govern”.
