German tourism giant Tui has fallen out with the Turkish government. But paradoxically not in Turkey. It is in Cyprus that the tour operator has put its foot in it.

Few people know this in France, but the island of Cyprus is divided into two parts: the north is pro-Turkish and the south is Greek and independent, a member of the European Union.

Tourists most often travel to the south, although until now they made excursions to the northern part, which, due to the military conflict, continues to be another attraction.

Ankara’s anger

But Tui made a mistake. Following instructions from the Cypriot government, the tour operator decided to cancel all excursions to the north.

The decision was communicated to the wholesaler’s staff by email which said, among other things, that ” Tui has reached an agreement with the government of Cyprus to stop promoting and selling excursions in the occupied northern part of Cyprus« .

Of course, the Turkish government did not like it. The northern area is pro-Turkish and Ankara is keeping a close eye on its interests there. Tui is therefore playing on the nerves of the neighbouring country, Turkey, where its tourist interests are much greater than those in Cyprus.

In addition, Tui uses terms in his email that are not suitable for Turks, such as ” occupied territories ».

The Turks do not receive tourism because neither of the island’s two airports are on their territory and because the north has not been as popular, but tourists diverted from the south are vital to their economy.

What was he going to do in this mess?

The Cyprus conflict is at the root of the terrible historical relations between Greece and Turkey, which are manifested in virtually every area of trade and international relations.

There was a lack of large-scale tourism, which unfortunately has now been achieved.
