Two years later, Jannik Sinner is back in the quarter-finals at the US Open. On Monday evening, the world number 1 pushed aside American Tommy Paul in three sets (7-6, 7-6, 6-1). The young Italian will face Daniil Medvedev with a possible place in the last four in New York for the first time in his career.

Jannik Sinner – Daniil Medvedev, the revenge. A little less than two months after the Russian’s victory in five sets (6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3) in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, the two men will meet again in the quarter-finals, but this time at the US Open. After Medvedev made short work of the Portuguese Nuno Borges (34th) a little earlier, Sinner, who had also pulverized (6-1, 6-2) the “Tsar” – against whom he is still trailing 7-5 on all confrontations – last March in Miami, joined the Moscow native in the quarter-finals after his victory in three sets there too (7-6, 7-6, 6-1) against Tommy Paul. Unlike his future opponent, the world number 1, who had already found himself at this stage of the tournament in 2022, had to work hard to escape the clutches of the American ranked 14th in the world. Before finishing the job, in the third set, with a stinging 6-1 inflicted on a Paul stunned by the scenario of the first two sets, the young Italian, winner at the start of the year of the Australian Open (his first title in a Grand Slam tournament) had to go through two decisive games to get the upper hand on the man who had seen his great Olympic adventure at the Paris 2024 Games end in the quarter-finals against Carlos Alcaraz, who seemed unstoppable at the time.

Sinner termine fort

Before winning the first of these two tie-breaks quite easily (7-3), Sinner had even given himself a scare. Paul, who had made a rather impressive start to the match, had in fact led 4-1 before seeing the number 1 seed gradually come back to level, and even move ahead for the first time in the game, without managing to convert the set point he had obtained, at 5-4. The second set, however, proved to be extremely tight from the first to the last point. And while the American was constantly in the lead, neither player managed to break, and this second set was therefore, like the first, decided in a tiebreak. Much more contested than the previous set, it nevertheless saw Sinner have the last word again, this time with a score of 7-5. From then on, there was no more match, and the Italian was able to calmly unfold in the third set to offer himself a new quarter-final in Grand Slam against Medvedev. Hoping this time to win, and thus play his first semi-final in New York.
