Portuguese swept away without any difficulty: Russian now finds the winner between Jannik and American Tommy Paul

Louis Ansaloni

September 2 – 10:25 PM – MILANO

Daniil Medvedev destroys Nuno Borges and flies to the quarterfinals of the US Open. A match that is a clear message to all his opponents, first and foremost Jannik Sinner, who could meet him in the next round, if only the world number one beats Tommy Paul tonight. The Russian has come this far losing only one set, against Lajovic in the first round, expending little energy, unlike what happened for example in Australia, where he reached the final (against Jannik) exhausted from the many hours lost on the court against opponents clearly inferior to him. This time, however, the tank is full.

match without history

Medvedev in New York doesn’t seem to be in the mood for joking, in short. The world number five beat Borges in what seemed almost like a training session, at times, with a score of 6-0 6-1 6-3 in an hour and fifty minutes. A match that as its most exciting moment had an interruption of just over 6 minutes due to a fire alarm in the room for the line control system, the Var of tennis, where they check whether the ball is in or out, effectively replacing the linesmen. In the first two sets Medvedev literally destroyed the Portuguese, number 34 in the world, 27 years old, who he had already beaten (with much more difficulty, also losing a set) in Australia. There was no match, so easy that at a certain point the Russian went out of rhythm. It was seen at the beginning of the third set, the only moment of minimal difficulty for Medvedev, when after having wasted two break points with the score at 1-0 in his favor he lost his serve in the following game. Break recovered immediately, with the break for the fire alarm, and from there it was all downhill until the final 6-3.

wait for the opponent

“New York is my favorite tournament, the city I love the most,” Medvedev said at the end of the match. “I will watch the match between Sinner and Paul, even if it could be late, at midnight. It will be a great match, very physical, Tommy played very well this year, I could have lost twice. It doesn’t matter who wins, I’m ready, we’ll see how it ends.” For the Russian, it is the eleventh career slam quarterfinal, the fifth in the last six years at the US Open, where he won his only slam, in 2021.
