The tunnel closure period was chosen because the autumn period is the lowest in terms of attendance, particularly for light vehicles.

“Test site” and serial works

These works are expected to be the first in a long series. As the vault of this 60-year-old structure requires extensive renovations, this will only be a “test project”, which could well be continued next year. If the results are positive, work on an additional 600 metres will be undertaken in 2025. “The tunnel is reaching a period where it requires major civil engineering work”, notes the operating company TMB-GEIE in a press release.

Initially planned for 2023, this experimental work was postponed following a landslide on the A43 motorway a year ago. Preparatory work had already taken place in autumn 2023, causing a nine-week closure at the time. The total represents an investment of 50 million euros.
