The rings of discord. Rachida Dati reacted to the proposal of the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, who wants to perpetuate the rings on the Eiffel Tower, after the end of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the capital. “The hanging of the Olympic rings had been exceptionally exempted by Olympic law, but on a temporary basis”recalls on the social network X, the Minister of Culture resigns. “Before any decision is made and any announcement is made in this matter, it is important that all procedures and consultations aimed at protecting heritage are respected”she continues.
“The Eiffel Tower is a protected monument, the work of an immense engineer and creator. Respect for its architectural gesture and its work requires, before making any substantial modification, a work permit and an impact assessment, in accordance with the Heritage Code.”she added. If Rachida Dati does not deny that “The Olympic and Paralympic Games are a moment of joy that brings together all French people”, “the protection of our common heritage over time also unites them”.
Anne Hidalgo had assured Saturday in West France that as mayor of Paris, she had the agreement of the IOC and the decision was up to her. “It’s a beautiful idea to combine the Eiffel Tower, a monument designed to be ephemeral for a Universal Exhibition, with the Games, an ephemeral moment that will also have left its mark on Paris and our country. I want the two to remain united.”the mayor had justified. The Eiffel Tower remains, with a few nuances of paint, and apart from the effects of technological developments, the same as the one erected by Gustave Eiffel for the Universal Exhibition of 1889. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1964.
