The mayor of the southern Mexican city of Chilpancingo was murdered, authorities said Sunday, the latest in a series of crimes against politicians in the violence-stricken Latin American country.
The governor of the state of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, condemned the murder of the mayor of Chilpancingo, Alejandro Arcos, and said it had been confirmed by the prosecutor’s office.
“His loss mourns the entire Guerrero society and fills us with indignation,” he wrote in X, without giving details of the circumstances.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), to which Arcos, 43, belonged and who took office just six days ago, denounced the “cowardly crime” and asked for justice.
“Enough of violence and impunity! The people of Guerrero do not deserve to live in fear,” said the PRI in X.
Alejandro Moreno, president of the party, condemned the crime and recalled that “just three days ago (they murdered) the secretary of this same City Council, Francisco Tapia.”
“They had been in office for less than a week. Young and honest officials who sought progress for their community,” he lamented.
Guerrero is one of the Mexican states most affected by drug cartel violence due to its strategic location that extends along the Pacific coast.
More than 450,000 people have been killed and tens of thousands have gone missing in Mexico since the government deployed the army to combat drug trafficking in 2006.
Politicians, particularly at the local level, are frequently victims of violence related to corruption and the multibillion-dollar drug trade.
