Forget Passion Of The Christ 2 for a second – it looks like Mel Gibson’s next project is actually going to be a limited TV series about the Great Siege of Malta.

When asked about his recent trip to Malta – where he even met up with Prime Minister Robert Abela – Gibson was obviously questioned about the long-rumoured sequel to his religious drama… but his answer actually gave us more info on something even closer to the islands’ hearts and history.

“Sure, well, there’s that, but there’s also — I’m also working on a TV limited series about the Siege of Malta, which is an incredible story, and there’s only one place to film that, I mean, in Malta,” Gibson said. “Because that’s where it happened, at these fortresses where 700 knights defended Malta against an onslaught from the Turkish and Suleiman sent 40,000 men and ships and, wow, the knights won. So, it’s a pretty crazy, great story.”

“I’d like to be in it, but I don’t know if I’ll have the time, you know?” Gibson said when asked whether he would actually end up starring in it. “But I certainly want to be like a producer of it, and I’ve worked with a very talented writer on the script, so it’s going to be good for somebody. I know that it’s a great story.”

Are you looking forward to finally seeing Malta’s intense Great Siege of 1565 on the big screen? Send this to someone who’d love to watch this once it’s out!
