‘We’d both been around horses a little,” said Wilson about their experience prior to filming. “But you get a little nervous about hitting your mark.

“To come galloping into a scene and wind up in the right place – those things you take for granted in a movie.

“But once you’re working on a Western, you have to try and figure out.”

Filming in the Wild West, under the direction of Costner was a “dream come true” for Wilson.

“I’m from Texas, but from the suburbs,” he explained. “But I’d grown up with friends who had ranches and farms.

“So a couple of times a year, just all through my life, we’d go out to these rural locations and ride horseback. We didn’t have any form or really know what we were doing so it was interesting for me to get to work with the real cowboys,” he smiled.

And real horses too!

“The horses, they’re really big, they’re really smart, they’re really fast – that was one of my favorite parts about it.

“I had a great horse named Charm, and I think people – like Sam Worthington, he got a kick out of it too.”

While their characters don’t interact in the movie, Wilson said it’s something they talked about off-screen.

“I did get to spend time with Sam and he’s such a good, hard working, focused guy,” he said of his co-star.

“Sienna Miller, she was also great to be around. It really was just a great ensemble cast.”

Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won – and lost – through the blood, sweat and tears of many.

Starring alongside Costner, Wilson and Worthington is an impressive A-list cast including Sienna Miller (Alfie), Giovanni Ribisi (Saving Private Ryan), Will Patton (Stan Exclusive Series Yellowstone) and Jena Malone (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire).

“That was the really fun thing, there were all these people from Kevin’s cinematic history that he brought back,” said Wilson.

“Not just actors but crew people too.”
