“Russia will not win,” Biden promises Zelensky

Joe Biden pledged Thursday that Russia would “not win” the war in Ukraine, during a visit by Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House.

“Russia will not win,” launched the American leader from the Oval Office, 39 days before the American presidential election which promises to be extremely close, and on which the future of support for kyiv depends.

In order to “help Ukraine win this war”, the American president announced Thursday morning an “increase in security aid” – without, however, mentioning the green light hoped for by kyiv to fire missiles towards Russia long range made in the USA.

Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed this announcement which, according to him, will promote the “victory” of his country in the war waged by Russia.

In Hungary, a close friend of Orban considers Ukraine’s resistance “irresponsible”

A close aide to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban found himself in turmoil on Thursday after suggesting the central European country would not have defended itself against a Russian invasion, criticizing Ukraine’s response. In a video published Wednesday by the pro-government newspaper Mandiner, political director Balazs Orban estimated that “based on 1956”, the date of the Hungarian uprising bloodily suppressed by the Soviet army, Hungary would “probably not have not like the president [ukrainien] Volodymyr Zelensky two and a half years ago, because it’s irresponsible.”

“He dragged his country into a defensive war, many people died, territories were lost,” said the official – who is not related to Viktor Orban. “But if we had been asked, we would not have advised it, because in 1956 we learned that we had to be careful and watch out for precious Hungarian lives,” he added.

Balazs Orban “humiliated the memory of thousands of Hungarian fighters for the freedom and independence of their country”, reacted the main opponent Peter Magyar on Facebook on Thursday, calling for his resignation before October 23, marking the commemoration of the uprising of 1956.

A Ukrainian and a Belarusian convicted of spying for Russia

A Ukrainian and a Belarusian, accused of having installed cameras along Polish railway tracks used to transport aid to Ukraine, were sentenced Thursday to prison for spying on behalf of Russia by the court regional Lublin (east).

The two men are part of a group of sixteen Ukrainian, Belarusian and Russian nationals, arrested in Poland in March 2023 and suspected of preparing acts of sabotage and collecting information for the benefit of Russia.

The 23-year-old Ukrainian national, Maksym L. (Polish law prohibits publication of full name, editor’s note) was sentenced to six years in prison for espionage and participation in an organized criminal group targeting the interests of Poland. Belarusian national Ouladyslaou P., aged 30, was sentenced to 34 months in prison.

Qatar announces agreement with Ukraine and Russia for child exchange

Qatar announced Thursday an agreement with Ukraine and Russia for the exchange under its aegis of 13 children displaced by the war, kyiv demanding the return of nearly 20,000 minors “deported or forcibly displaced” in Russia.

“Nine minors and one adult will be reunited with their families in Ukraine,” a Qatari official announced to AFP, specifying that “four minors” would be reunited with their families in Russia. According to the same source, the nine Ukrainian children are aged between 12 and 17, while the Russian children are between two and seven years old.

All will be welcomed at the Qatari embassy in Moscow before reunification with their families.

Qatar, mediator in this thorny issue, has helped since July 2023 to repatriate Ukrainian children transferred to Russia and the territories under Russian occupation since the start of the invasion in February 2022.

Biden did not give Ukraine the green light to use US missiles against Russia

If Joe Biden announced an increase in military aid to Ukraine with the supply of long-range JSOW (Joint Standoff Weapon) munitions, his statement did not mention the authorization hoped for by kyiv to launch long-range missiles from American manufacturing to Russia. The latter strongly warned against such a measure.

The change in doctrine on nuclear weapons, a “signal” for the West

The Kremlin said the change in Russian doctrine regarding the use of nuclear weapons should be seen as a “signal” to the West. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Wednesday that his country could use nuclear weapons in the event of a “massive launch” of air attacks and that any assault carried out by a non-nuclear country but supported by a power with atomic weapons could be considered a “joint” assault.

Russia claims capture of town in eastern Ukraine

Russia claimed Thursday the capture of Ukrainsk, a town in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, where its troops have been advancing in recent months against kyiv’s forces.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced in a statement that its soldiers had “liberated” Ukrainsk, which had around 10,000 inhabitants before the start of Moscow’s offensive in February 2022.

At the heart of the issues of the American presidential election, Zelensky in the White House

Volodymyr Zelensky will be received in the afternoon by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, at a time when the war in Ukraine is once again entering the American presidential campaign. The Ukrainian president will outline his “victory plan” aimed at putting an end to the Russian invasion that began on February 24, 2022. The aim is to place kyiv in a strong position for negotiations.

Donald Trump accuses Zelensky of “refusing to conclude” a deal on the war in Ukraine

“We continue to give billions of dollars to a man who refuses to conclude an agreement, Zelensky,” denounced the Republican candidate for the American presidential election, during a campaign rally. “Every time he came to our country, he left with 60 billion dollars, I think he is the best salesman on the planet,” quipped the former president in North Carolina.

A meeting between Donald Trump, very critical of the amounts disbursed by Washington for kyiv, and the Ukrainian leader, was discussed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

But this interview probably risks being canceled according to the American press, which assures that Donald Trump did not appreciate an interview given by Volodymyr Zelensky to the New Yorker magazine in which the Ukrainian leader asserts that the Republican candidate “doesn’t really know how stop this war.”
