Martin Odegaard a major injury doubt for the North London Derby

-

Martin Odegaard has suffered a seemingly very worrying injury whilst on international duty, just days before the all-important North London Derby, which takes place on Sunday, 15 September.

The Gunners’ skipper had been representing his nation, Norway, for whom he is also the captain, in a UEFA Nations League League B match at home to Austria, when he was hit with a heavy challenge to his ankle.

Martin Odegaard was forced off in the 67th minute because of the issue and had to be assisted off of the pitch by two physios, with the creative midfielder seemingly unable to walk unassisted.

Ødegaard plays an integral role for club and country, is among the most creative players in the Premier League, and has been pivotal in Arsenal’s two recent title challenges.

News of his injury will worry fans ahead of Sunday’s crucial derby game, as manager Mikel Arteta looks likely to be forced to pick from a heavily limited squad for the game.

As well as the captain, Riccardo Calafiori is also an injury doubt after an incident during the international break, while Declan Rice is suspended and Takehiro Tomiyasu, as well as new signing Mikel Merino, also remain sidelined with injury.

Fans will be able to take some comfort following the positive news earlier on Monday that Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus os expected to be fit in time to face the Lilywhites, though Kai Havertz is expected to start up front regardless of Jesus’ potential availability.

Because of the several unavailable first-team players ahead of the game, Arsenal may be forced to rely on academy stars to fill out their substitutes bench, with Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ayden Heaven and Josh Nichols among those who could be given a place in the matchday squad for the huge game – while academy goalkeeper Tommy Setford could also be in the squad.
