Here are the first images of Huawei’s stunning Z-folding smartphone

A smartphone that folds in three, that’s the project of the Huawei Mate XT. On the eve of its presentation, a first image allows us to discover the concept.

Huawei will therefore be among the first manufacturers to launch the new form factor of three-folding smartphones. The name of this very first model and a first image have just been revealed just before the launch conference on September 10, 2024.

The Huawei Mate XT, that’s its name, therefore presents itself at first glance as a smartphone from the Mate range that is as classic as it gets when folded. A back covered in vegan leather, a gold-colored coating and an octagonal photo block that a high-end model from the Chinese giant would not have balked at.

Two different folds

In the image shared by the manufacturer, we discover how the model will fold and unfold, adopting a Z shape. So first we have a completely classic fold, which we find on book formats like the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

The second hinge adopts a rarer folding. Rather than closing like a book, it allows two parts of the phone to open fully until they fold over each other. It is also one of these two parts that will act as the main screen when the smartphone is folded. Unfolded, the Huawei Mate XT will therefore develop the equivalent of three times the display surface of a classic smartphone with a screen around the expected 10 inches.

The choice of this design also puts everything on this large screen, even if it means abandoning other advantages of more traditional folding formats. For example, it will be impossible to take a photo with the main photo module while having a return on a screen. Similarly, because of the photo module, it seems difficult to imagine a Flex mode taking advantage of the large display surface.

The pre-order page also allows us to discover the configurations, resolutely oriented towards the high end. We have two models, one with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage and the other with 1 TB of storage.
