2024 US Open Tennis Tips – Day 5

Lorenzo Musetti vs Brandon Nakashima

Saturday August 31st, 5:30am AEST

This match has all the makings of a potential match of the day in my opinion, with two of the form players meeting for a place in the fourth round.

Brandon Nakashima has certainly found another level since the start of the grass season. He has rolled through Holger Rune and Arthur Cazaux in his first two rounds, and confidence is certainly high. The stats for his wins don’t quite look as dominant as the scoreboard may suggest, but he certainly commands respect in the market at the moment when you look at his odds. With that being said, is there perhaps too much respect in the market? He isn’t the only player in this match-up that is currently displaying some very solid form.

Lorenzo Musetti has been on an exceptional run since Wimbledon. He made the semi finals at Wimbledon, then the final in Umag, then backed up the following week and won bronze in Paris, and has notched wins over Auger Aliassime, Jarry, Opelka and Kecmanovic on the hardcourt with the only loss to Francis Tiafoe. The Italian is playing some inspired tennis and is on the verge of a new career high. What appeals with Musetti here is the fact that he can neutralise balls, particularly with his backhand slice, and combining that with his high confidence play and I actually make the Italian a slight favourite in this match-up. My opinion of Nakashima in recent months has certainly grown. However, it doesn’t match my current opinion of Musetti.
