“Pit Stops” arrive in Formula E to carry out ultra-fast recharges

Formula E announced in 2022 that it was working on introducing mid-race stops to recharge, a promise that will come to fruition for the first time in a championship race next February.

At the upcoming Saudi Arabian E-Prix, Formula E will introduce an interesting novelty that promises to significantly increase spectator interest. As is the case in Formula 1 and many other FIA competitions, Formula E vehicles will start making pit stops during the race to 'refuel'. Although in this case the objective will not be to fill the tank, but rather to increase the level of energy stored in the battery thanks to ultra-fast recharges.

The management of Formula E has just officially confirmed this during the Jeddah E-Prix which will be held on February 14 and 15. calls will be released Forever Boosts, which will add a greater level of excitement to the races and allow teams to play with different strategies.

ces Forever Boosts They will, however, be somewhat different from what you probably imagine. Unlike what happens with a conventional electric vehicle, their objective will not be to reach at least 80% of the battery capacity. At each pit stop it will be possible to recharge an additional 10 percentor what is it the same 3.85 kWh, for which only 30 seconds will be needed using an ultra-fast charger with a power of 600 W. The vehicle must also be stopped for at least 34 seconds, which leaves 4 seconds for the different teams to connect and disconnect the charging hose.

Some other considerations not to overlook

Another point to keep in mind is that these Forever Boosts They will be compulsory for teams in certain races of the season, but not in all. This means that teams do not have the opportunity in such cases to decide whether the time lost during the pit stop compensates for the additional energy gained or whether it would be better to avoid this stop to recharge. They'll have to at least waste those 34 seconds to recharge no matter what..

Furthermore, it will not be possible to carry out a Boost at any time of the race freely, but is activated from a specific load level, communicated to the teams 21 days before the race. However, only one car per team may be stopped at the pit to recharge, the other must continue the race at that time.

All this means is that, taking into account the maintenance of impulse zones Attack modeteams must play with these two elements to carry out their strategies during the race in order to achieve the best possible result by winning over the others. In this way, it is expected that the level of interest in the races will increase significantly to the benefit of spectators.

“After an exhaustive testing phase, we are very pleased to have succeeded in giving new impetus to electric mobility with the introduction of Boost. “This pioneering feature will add a new strategic element to Formula E for each race and underlines the FIA’s strong commitment to implementing new technologies in competitions.”
