Valtteri Bottas, now ex-driver of the Sauber F1 team (future Audi), has drawn a line under his 2024 season with a touch of bitterness, but also a certain lucidity. Forced to leave the team after what he describes as “unlucky” timing, the Finn said he had no regrets about his commitment, saying he gave everything in conditions he considered difficult. In a statement that did not lack spice, Bottas even said that he did not believe that Max Verstappen himself could have done better at the wheel of his Sauber. A remark which, although measured, echoes the performance gap between the cars in the field and reminds us of the limits of talent in the face of inferior mechanics.
A little dig at Verstappen
“Yes, it's in my nature. I always try to do everything I can. And I think I had a good season. Of course, not in terms of results, but if you look at individual performances , I'm happy. I don't think anyone, even Max, could have done better with this car, that's how it is,” he explained. As he prepares to return to a reserve role at Mercedes in 2025, Bottas does not seem to be turning his back on the idea of one day finding a seat!
