Formula 1 | Nyck de Vries was Marko's 'biggest mistake' in

Dr Helmut Marko admits that recruiting Nyck de Vries was his “biggest mistake” at the helm of Red Bull's Formula 1 driver program.

Other former drivers promoted by Red Bull – including Scott Speed, Jaime Alguersuari, Daniil Kvyat and others – have also failed to deliver on their initial promise.

But Marko says the failure of de Vries' experiment, when the Dutchman impressed so much during his run for Williams in 2022 that he earned a full-time seat at AlphaTauri for 2023, is of another order .

After ten Grands Prix, de Vries, now 29 years old, was replaced by Daniel Ricciardo.

“My biggest mistake? There's no doubt about it, it was Nyck de Vries,” Marko said.

“He had a very good debut with Williams at Monza. But once at AlphaTauri he didn't progress.”

“He had an incredible track record. He was Formula 2 champion and also won the Formula E championship. But at home the clock said Nyck was the wrong choice.”

“And in his attempts to go faster, he just made mistakes.”

Last year, de Vries returned to Formula E and also raced in the Hypercar category with Toyota in the WEC.
