In Formula 1, every team has the same goal: to improve year after year. For the best of them, winning the constructor's title becomes the ultimate goal. But the teams at the bottom of the table also dream of joining the battle. This is why some of them follow a methodical process to achieve this dream.
McLaren is the best example. For several years, the British team struggled to build a competitive car, although little helped by an inefficient Honda engine (Alonso's famous “GP2 engine”). But by following a long but stable process, the team improved until winning the constructor's title in 2024.
Seeing this recent example can give you some ideas, and this is the direction Aston Martin wants to go.
Andy Cowell met la barre haute
Since its return to F1 in 2021, Aston Martin has followed a clear path to reach the top of the discipline. Certainly helped by the investments of Lawrence Stroll, the British team managed to attract the double world champion Fernando Alonso, the former genius engineer of Red Bull Adrian Newey, as well as the one who contributed to the domination of Mercedes, Andy Cowell. The latter, who has just been appointed team principal of Aston Martin for the 2025 season, is optimistic, even if the year 2024 was not exceptional (the best result was fifth place in Alonso in Saudi Arabia). In an interview given to Motorsport Magazine, the new boss set the bar high for 2025: “We are going to fight at the front, we are going to win races, and we want to win championships, although the competition is tough. »
Confident, Andy Cowell adds a layer: “You have to set yourself an ambitious goal. Take for example the mission to travel to Mars. My job is to create a team where everyone knows what their task and their position is, and my job is to talk with each of them to target what we can improve. »
Such optimism and self-confidence must necessarily please Fernando Alonso, who complained about his car many times last season. Now, we must translate these words into action on the track.
