Formula 1 | McLaren : Stella not surprised a customer team was able to beat Mercedes

McLaren boss Andrea Stella said becoming the first customer team to win an F1 championship in the turbo hybrid era was “not particularly satisfactory”.

By winning the constructors’ championship, McLaren became the first team other than Mercedes or Red Bull to win an F1 title since Brawn GP in 2009.

The success was also the first in the turbo hybrid era for a customer team, with Mercedes once again supplying its power unit to the team in 2021, having tried the experiment with Honda in late 2014.

A powertrain development freeze came into effect in 2022, with manufacturers not allowed to add performance upgrades to their units, with all customer teams required to be equipped with units identical to those of the team. main factory – which means that McLaren, Aston Martin and Williams customers have the same hardware and software as Mercedes.

“It’s not particularly satisfying because I think today, thanks to the regulations and the good work that the FIA has done, it has created parity in the way the engine is used between the customer teams and the teams factory,” it’s Stella.

“To be honest, we are quite confident that the performance of the customer units is as good as the factory teams and we also have a very good relationship with Mercedes.”

“We have a very open dialogue and we appreciate and recognize that ultimately it will always be Mercedes who have the final say when it comes to design for example, but the dialogue is good with them.”

“We know that they listen to our opinions, the relationship is strong and once again I would like to say that it is a good job that has been done by the FIA to protect the customer teams so that they can have opportunities to win races and championships without having to be a factory team.”
