Jos Verstappen sets the record straight on the infamous gas station story and attributes Max’s success to demanding love.

Jos Verstappen has finally addressed the long-running and controversial story of leaving him, his son Max Verstappen, at a gas station after a disappointing karting performance. The former driver clarified the incident, revealing that although the story was exaggerated, his parenting approach did indeed involve some tough love.

Make things clear

Jos denied ever abandoning his son at a gas station, as rumors suggested, but admitted giving him a week-long silent treatment after the disappointing ride. According to Jos, this method of discipline was not considered “too harsh” by Max, who later acknowledged how such moments shaped his mindset and resilience for Formula 1.

“I think it’s time to clarify this story,” Jos explained. “The truth is: I didn’t leave it there. I just didn’t speak for a week. Was it too hard? Not according to Max. He felt my attitude better prepared him for Formula 1.”

Develop mental strength

Jos believed these unorthodox parenting methods equipped Max with the mental toughness needed to handle the high-pressure environment of F1 and individuals like Red Bull’s notoriously demanding Helmut Marko.

“That’s why dealing with Helmut Marko, who is also known as an extremely tough guy, didn’t bother him anymore,” Jos said. “He also likes the fact that we continued to practice with the kart on slick tires on a wet track. I feel nothing but gratitude from him regarding his childhood with me. »

The Real Max Verstappen

Beyond his exploits on the track, Max Verstappen is known for his frank and unfiltered approach to public speaking—something Jos considers a source of pride. Despite his aggressive racing style, Jos revealed a contrasting side to Max’s personality, describing him as calm, balanced and seeking harmony in his private life.

“The way Max behaves in public, how he expresses his opinion without sugarcoating – this makes me just as extremely proud of my son as his sporting achievements,” Jos said. “On the track he is unconditionally aggressive, as he should be. But in private life he is a calm, extremely balanced and friendly soul. Someone who seeks harmony, listens carefully, and then draws conclusions. »

Max’s Dominance in Formula 1

Max Verstappen, now a four-time consecutive F1 world champion, has solidified his place as one of the sport’s most dominant drivers. Despite the intense education and high-pressure environment at Red Bull, Max’s performances only soared. At just 27 years old, he is on track to rewrite the record books again.

As the F1 world awaits a new season with Verstappen at the helm, Jos Verstappen’s influence and their shared journey continue to be a testament to the determination and sacrifice behind Max’s relentless quest for greatness.
