Max Verstappen admitted to being overwhelmed by anger after a failed qualifying session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
The Dutchman, initially 12th on the grid, was relegated to 17th place due to a penalty linked to exceeding his engine allocation, after the installation of a new power unit on his Red Bull.
The Red Bull driver was unable to complete his final fast lap, the red flag having been waved following an accident on the track. The Batavian then pointed out that other drivers like Lando Norris, his rival in the Championship, had finished his turn.
Verstappen’s frustration was exacerbated by the pole position taken by his title rival, Lando Norris. “I wanted to destroy everything in my room”, he confided. Ultimately, it was the intervention of his father, Jos Verstappen, which helped ease the tension.

“I was very upset about qualifying” Verstappen said on the Talking Bull podcast. “I wanted to destroy my room, but I walked into my room and my dad was sitting there.”
When asked if his father had ever destroyed the room for him, Verstappen replied: “No, he was the calm one. He was very calm. I was so angry and I saw him so calm, it calmed me down”, said the four-time F1 World Champion.
“You start P17, your main rival leaves first, which can change a large number of points at this point in the championship. So everyone was nervous.”
“But then it rained. I jumped in the car. Of course I like these conditions, I like wet, but you never know what’s going to happen or what can happen because at the same time you can get taken off or off the track yourself- even because it is very difficult.”
“But as soon as the race started it was good. It was nice. I really enjoyed it. I felt good. Step by step, I went back”, concluded the four-time F1 World Champion.
